Windows 7 support including support for Bitlocker provides enhanced data protection through drive encryption and integrity checking. Full system disk image backup lets you easily backup everything on a hard drive or partition. File and folder backup lets you back up only the files and folders you choose, rather than backing up and entire disk.
File backup search finds and backs up only the types of files you choose, such as photos, MP3 files, and documents. Incremental backup copies only files that have changed for fewer, faster backups. Why not try one free Norton Ghost alternative?
It offers more powerful backup options compared to Norton Ghost and can help you create bootable USB in only a few clicks. On internet, some users report that they cannot find a way to run the Ghost utility from USB key, because they don't have a CD drive bay. Now, let's have a closer look at this scenario. I have a disk image ghost of the disk need to be restored, and believe the ghost.
My laptop does not have a a cd-rom or floppy drive. Do you have similar issue? Step 1. Download the following two archive software and run the format tool as administrator. After that, click Start to mount DOS system files. Step 4. Click Yes when you are asked if you are really want to process with Format. Then, click OK. Step 5. A summary screen will show where you can also change a things like compression level via the Advanced Options button, but the default settings are usually good enough.
Click Finish. The final window gives the option to run the backup now and also to save the backup task as an XML file so you can run this task in future with a simple double click.
Just click OK to do both. When the imaging completes, you should have a file with random letters and numbers with the extension. The Macrium program will nag you every time you run it until you choose to create a rescue media, this is with good reason because you cannot recover your system image without the rescue disc.
You have the option of creating either a Windows based rescue disc or a Linux based one. At the next window, select a bit or bit rescue disc and click Next. The Macrium boot media can also perform backups. Acronis True Image is perhaps the gold standard in imaging software for home and small business use. There are however, special cutdown licensed versions created for hard drive manufacturers Western Digital and Seagate. As long as you have a drive by one of those companies installed on your system internal or external , you can use the special version of True Image.
The feature set is highly reduced from the full Acronis True Image but you can still backup and restore images, clone discs and mount images as virtual drives. Install and launch whichever version you have downloaded depending on your hardware.
Presets are available in the drop down for the drives you already have attached. Make sure your media is already inserted, click Next and then Proceed in the next window to write the rescue media. When we looked at Backupper for our imaging software speed and compression tests , we were mightily impressed. On top of that, Backupper Standard is completely free for personal and commercial use. Give the task a proper name.
System Backup chooses only the partitions required that enable Windows to boot for backup. If you have a system reserved partition, that will be included also. Click the writing option you prefer and follow the prompts to complete the process.
The AOMEI rescue disc is actually the same program as you get on the desktop and it should also recognize your previous backup tasks. Simply Click Restore on the task, click Yes when asked if you want to restore a system image, highlight the backup file and click Start Restore.
If you backup partition C onto partition D for example, and they are both on the same physical hard drive, if the drive fails you will lose both partitions at the same time, and that includes the only backup you might have of partition C.
This could be a costly and painful mistake. Great and very useful article but direly needs to be updated as many new versions have now replaced these tested versions which are now old and many are already obsolete.. Also needed: what are the boot media sizes needed for each program? Knowing this we will know what is the smallest size flash drive to use to create our emergency boot disk. There are programs that work only with a particular format and not the other, this will simplify our work.
Thank you. I tried Seagate Disc Wizard for a while. I would never want to depend on Seagate Disc Wizard. I have tried all of these, but one thing that I miss with Ghost was its ability to build its own recovery media into the backup DVD. One bad experience I had in the past, which is why I returned to Ghost, was if I misplaced the particular version of the recovery media, then my past backup files could not be read by the updated current version.
So, is there a good program out there that is like Ghost where the recovery program is built into the recovery media DVDs instead of being separate? What about a partial backup? The installed software will likely be far to integrated into Windows folders and the registry. My favorite has been Paragon Drive Copy for several years now. They were the first software to be able to copy a Windows 8 UEFI partition without having to tweak any of the settings and have the resulting clone drive be bootable.
Seems dubious, there have been similar claims in the past but no one has been able to do this right, but their other software is great so I will have to try it out. What image backup software is tested to work with Windows 10? Most I see are for win 7 or 8. Windows 10 compatibility is not listed because the article was released before it came out. They all do support Windows 10 though. Veeam Endpoint Backup free is worth considering.
It has a nice set of features and is fast for both backup and restore. Using an older version of Ghost on Windows 7, this seemed to work OK — it supported setting up the bigger partitions on the target drive beforehand and handled cloning to the larger partitions on the target drive. I tried it with Clonezilla, but it seems to want to clone to the target with the only same exact partition size as the source.
Those that have bought boxed products from various retailers are finding that Veritas does not accept their licence! This is a rediculous state of affairs.
SO now I'm left wondering what alternative backups solutions are available? I've tried Acronis True Image which was OK but users of the new product give it a low rating leaving me once again without any reliable solution.
Many people bought it from Symantec directly. I have not dealt with Veritas since it was split in December. It is also is listed on amazon. Thanks for your help, I did find the one on Amazon earlier this afternoon and have just emailed the supplier to check on the licence. Well I'm sure if it comes with a license key it will work.
I don't know about the telephone support, but who needs that? Well I suppose buying through Amazon I should have better support should I need to return it. I'm always dubious about other online retailers that I've never used before. Hopefully if the seller on Amazon responds I'll place my order pretty soon, though I might still wait and see how my 60 days trial pans out. I tried running the recovery disc yesterday and all seemed okay and all drives were visible.
It seems rather bizarre that the creation of the recovery disc asked for the serial number but then also gave me an option for using the serial number at every restore session instead, I certainly wasn't asked for one during my test yesterday. The reason it asked for the serial number to make the SRD is so you can do Cold Backups without having to enter the key every time.
Once you enter the key to activate the product, you do not have to enter it because it will read it from the installation. BTW, what version do they have up for download? The latest is This is the one that is compatible with Windows Ah ha.. I was worried it meant that I wouldn't be able to perform a restore using the trial version. Can you verify this for me please? Yes I also have the latest version Thanks again for all your help!
Yes you should be able to do the restore. BTW, this whole key thing works the same way as Ghost Thanks for the explanation, actually I've never tried doing 'cold backups' with Ghost 15, I guess it's something I probably over-looked or didn't ever need. BTW, I had an interesting phone call earlier this morning from Veritas. The guy asked how I was getting on with my trial and if I was considering buying a licence for my business?
I mentioned that I was a home user and didn't have a business though having used Ghost 15 and it's predecessors for a number of years I would be buying a licence shortly. The tone of the conversation quickly changed and he seemed eager to end the call. I did however mention the difficulties I faced trying to buy a licence through the Veritas website and he promptly said "our product is not aimed at home users", he did however say that I might find an odd copy on the internet somewhere".
I mentioned that I had seen it on Amazon and he simply said "you should be okay then". End of call. So there we have it.. What I do find odd though is why they produce a desktop edition? Personally I think they're losing custom by not catering for the home user, currently there's very few good backup solutions on the market.
